The dataset is a hierarchical file that contains two levels of hierarchy
-- household and individual. There are two types of households: domestic
and collective. For domestic households, each household observation is
followed by records of all individuals in the household. The record
length for both household and individual observations are 44 bytes.
Household and individual observation records are distinguished by a
variable called "Record type", which is an one digit variable
occupying the first column of each observation (1 = Domestic Household; 2 =
Collective Household; 3 = Individual).
Universe:
Information from the census were derived from questions asked of the entire
population.
Design and Methodology:
There are two types of household records in the 1% Sample 1982 Census of
China: the domestic household and the collective household. The sample of
domestic households was drawn based on records of one-in-one hundred
systemically selected households and individual records by taking every 100th
household and all of their family members from the original 1982 Population
Census of China, following an initial random selection. The sample of
collective households were taken from every 100th individual in all collective
households. Thus some collective households with less than 100 members were
not sampled.
