The GB (Guo Biao - National Standard) Codes for the Administrative Divisions of the People's Republic of China were published by the State Bureau of Technological Supervision of P. R. China. The initial version was published in December 1980, with late r revisions being published in 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1991, and 1995, with the corresponding archive documentation numbers GB 2260-80, GB 2260-82, GB 2260-84, GB 2260-86, GB2260-1988, GB 2260-91 and GB/T 2260-1995.
The GB Codes for the Administrative Divisions of the People's Republic of China define 6-digit codes for each of the administrative regions from the province level down to the county level; these regions include provinces (autonomous regions, municipaliti es directly under the Central Government), prefectures (prefecture-level cities, autonomous prefectures, leagues), and counties (districts, county-level cities, autonomous counties, banners). These codes are used for information management and exchange r elated to Chinese administrative regions.
(The data set lists the GB codes from 1 January 1982 to 31 December 1992. Codes contained in this dataset may not correspond in all cases to the administrative regions at that particular time due to the time difference in updating the GB codes relative to changes in administrative regions).
