This urban population dataset includes all urban centers that meet the criterion of having 5,000 or more inhabitants in 1980. Data are provided as well for metropolitan areas of more than 100,000 inhabitants (1990) and conurbations of fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. The population of the 706 urban localities was traced forward to 1990 and, by decade back to 1921, based on census documents.
Over 700 urban places (Metropolitan Area, Conurbation or City) have been identified with the following: geographic coordinates; a unique identifier; place name; associated population data from 1921 to 1990 at ten year intervals; elevation; an atlas page number (from Carta De Mexico, 1982); and, a capital 'flag' if applicable.
