The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Priorities List (NPL) Sites Point Data with CIESIN Modifications, Version 2 is a modified version of the 2014 EPA NPL list. It includes all the sites that are proposed, currently on, or deleted from the Final NPL as of February 27, 2014. CIESIN has fixed eleven of the original coordinates by correcting latitude or longitude coordinates. It contains the point locations, including the eleven corrections, for 1,747 U.S. hazardous waste sites on the National Priorities List (NPL) of EPA's Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Information System (CERCLIS) for the fifty states, Puerto Rico, and 4 other territorial areas plus the now independent Palau, Federated States of Micronesia. The sites in CERCLIS are also known as Superfund Sites. The NPL is intended primarily to guide the EPA in determining which sites warrant further investigation.
The data set presented here provides the latitude and longitudinal coordinates of the centroid for each of the 1,747 NPL sites. As described by the Florida Geographic Data Library Documentation, some of the National Priorities List (NPL) sites have latitude and longitude data accurate to within 30 meters and, in some cases, in the sub-meter range. The latitude and longitude for other sites is the centroid of the ZIP code area for the ZIP code of the site's address. This data set is modified and distributed by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN). It was first obtained in response to a request by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to conduct an assessment of populations living in proximity to NPL sites (NIEHS, HHSN273200800139P). The updated database presented here was incorporated into the Innovative Methodologies & Mapping to Assess Vulnerable Populations Near SF Sites project (NIEHS, 3 P42 ESO10239-09 GOL).
The U.S. EPA National Priorities List Sites database is updated several times during the year as new sites are proposed, finalized, and deleted. As time and resources allow, CIESIN downloads the data from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Priorities List (NPL) (http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/npl). The updated data set is cleaned and modified, checking for accuracy and making it compatible with the other data sets used for the Columbia University Superfund Research Program National Priorities List Superfund Footprint: Site, Population, and Environmental Characteristics Mapper.
