For the purpose of identifying hazard hotspots, values of 2 meters per second per second and less were excluded from analysis. The resulting ranges of pga values were classified into deciles, 10 classes of approximately an equal number of grid cells. This data set is the result of collaboration among the Columbia University Center for Hazards and Risk Research (CHRR) and Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN). Process_Step: Process_Description: Using historical and expert opinion, GSHAP developed a dataset of peak ground acceleration (pga) values to be exceeded in a 50-year period at a 10 percent probability level, or once every 500 years. This dataset is a point file regularly spaced a 1 degree intervals. To ensure compatibility across the project, the dataset was resampled to 2.5 minutes. For Global Earthquake Hazard Distribution-peak ground acceleration, it was decided that those points where the pga was 2 meters per second per second or less would be excluded. The remaining points were used to construct a 2.5 minute grid surface. The range of pga values was classified into deciles, 10 classes of an approximately equal number of grid cells. Areas of "No Data" are not necessarily without risk from hazards, but may rather be an artifact of a mask that excluded from analysis those areas with a population density less than 5 persons per square kilometer and without significant agriculture.
