Welcome to ENTRI's Thematic Guide. This Guide is intended to
help you understand the issues that arise at the intersection
between global environmental change and the international
political and legal system. The Guide is intended to help you
discover and make use of information resources developed by a wide
range of disciplines, ranging from law and the social sciences to
the environmental, Earth, and natural sciences.
Introduction and Overview--Provides a general overview of the linkages
human activities and global environmental change, the importance of the
nation-state in addressing the undesirable elements of those changes, and
the role that environmental treaties, national policy information,
national resource indicators, and remotely sensed data play in assessing
Environmental Treaties and Other Policy Instruments--Provides an
overview of treaties including information on the negotiation, structure,
and status of these legal instruments, especially in the environmental
context. This section also discusses the role of other "policy
instruments" such as national and subnational legislation as well as
programmes, initiatives, and statements from governments and
Section 3: Exploring the Linkages
Between Treaties and Indicators--Discusses in greater detail the
relationship between treaties and national-level indicators, including
brief overviews of data and information about key environmental resource
indicators. There are subsections devoted to major global issues related
to global change. Each subsection follows a standard format which
includes discussion of relevant remotely sensed data, and pointers
to relevant NASA, USGCRP, and international research programs relevant to
particular international agreements.
