Data sources

This database was initially produced for the UNEP/GRID-WRI-NCGIA Africa Population Database.

See the GRID-Sioux Falls web site at http://grid2.cr.usgs.gov

The 1980 and 1990 estimates produced for this database were used to produce the P95E estimate.

Pop data sources:

  1. Kenya Government (undated), Census of Kenya 1989, Digital File
  2. Brass. W. and C.L. Jolly, eds. (1993), Population dynamics of Kenya, National Academy Press, Washington, D.C.
  3. Kaplan, I., et. al. (1967), Area handbook for Kenya, U.S. Government, Washington, D.C. Division (3rd level) totals were available only for 1989.

Areal interpolation of the 1979 figures using GIS coverages of locations for 1979 and sublocations for 1989 produced reasonable estimates only for some districts.

For others, district growth rates were used to produce division figures for 1979. For 1962 division estimates growth rates by district for the 1962-79 period were used.

P60-90 were computed using the resulting intercensal growth rates 1962-79 and 1979-89. However, the figures are very accurate at the division level only for 1990; for the other estimated years, the division level data should be interpreted with caution.

Boundaries for 1989 were obtained from UNESCO/TSBF Nairobi and rubber-sheeted to match the 1979 coverage which was assumed to have higher accuracy. Accuracy reached in this operation is unknown. The sublocation boundaries were dissolved to yield a division level coverage.
