Data sources This database was initially produced for the UNEP/GRID-WRI-NCGIA Africa Population Database. See the GRID-Sioux Falls web site at http://grid2.cr.usgs.gov The population figures for 1960-90 are, in turn, based on the OECD/Club du Sahel West Africa Long Term Perspective Study (WALTPS), and were estimated by Benoit Ninnin. The 1980 and 1990 estimates produced for this database were used to produce the P95E estimate. WALTPS pop estimates based on: Etude d'une Image - Long Terme de l'Afrique. Republic of Liberia: Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs, 1983, Census of Population and Housing: Summary Population Results: Monrovia 1987. However, rather than using 1980-1990 growth rates to compute P95E, the initial estimates were adjusted so that the total national population matches the UN estimate for 1995, which due to recent events in the country are significantly lower than the estimates based on recent growth rates would imply.
