Welcome to the SEDAC Hazards Mapper

This web mapping application allows users to estimate the populations in proximity to natural disasters, and to assess exposure. To return an estimate of the population exposed to natural disasters, you can use one of two tools (found in the upper left):

  • Click on Polygon Tool to define a polygon.
  • Click on Circle Tool to define a circle.

To turn layers on and off, click on Layer Switcher in the upper right.

For additional information on how these and other tools work, click on the '?' icon.

You can also click on a point feature such as a power plant, dam, or earthquake to retrieve more information.

Information on natural disasters and environment displayed in this application are updated as follows:

  • Fire information from the MODIS active fire instrument is updated every day. This layer is courtesy of NASA EOSDIS LANCE.
  • Aerosol Optical Depth and Corrected Reflectance information is updated every day. These layers are courtesy of NASA EOSDIS GIBS.
  • Global 250m Water Map is courtesy of NASA EOSDIS GIBS.
  • Earthquake information is updated every day. Earthquake alerts are courtesy of USGS.
  • Flood and tornado warnings (US only) are updated as they are issued. These are courtesy of NOAA.
