Virginia Cancer Registry

The Virginia Cancer Registry (VCR) began collecting data in 1970. At that time, five hospitals were voluntarily participating in the registry. Participation increased over the years, but reporting remained voluntary until 1990. That year, reporting became required by the Code of Virginia which mandated that hospitals, clinics, and independent pathology laboratories send information to the central registry. The current registry is population-based; the entire state population is covered. Incidence rates may be obtained and findings generalized across the population at large. Due to budget cuts and other constraints, however, the most recent complete year of data in the Registry is 1992.

The VCR currently maintains records on 281,219 cancer patients. Collected information includes data required by the American College of Surgeons (patient demographic information; mortality; and, tumor site, histology, and treatment) as well as state-specific data (history of tobacco and alcohol use, asbestos and dioxin exposure, and certain screening and surveillance data). Data on skin cancer excluding basal and squamous cell carcinomas are recorded by gender and race.

The Registry is in the process of expanding and enhancing its data collection, management, and analysis procedures in response to guidelines set forth by the National Program of Cancer Registries of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Emphasis is on ensuring a high capture rate of all Virginia cancer cases and the accurate collection of relevant information. Recent statistics and report are unavailable to the general public; however, specific data queries and statistical reports may be requested on an individual basis.
