Methodology Used

The methodology used to develop PLACE II has been refined since PLACE I. PLACE II employs GPWv3 population estimates from both 1990 and 2000, in order to assess trends and population shifts over time. Thematic classes and land area estimates (circa 2000) by country were held constant, to provide a uniform spatial geography across the decadal span. PLACE II also improved upon the spatial processing work flow to better account for GPWv3 updated coastlines and country boundaries. For this reason, PLACE II should be considered an improved product containing appropriately run time series, and will not compare well spatially or quantitatively with PLACE I. For more on PLACE II's methods, please see the full documentation available for download in the sidebar.
