Direct Estimation Techniques

Wherever reliable geo-referenced estimates of welfare exist, below the national level or broad regions, these may be linked to geographic boundaries in order to produce poverty maps. In most countries, due to the prohibitive cost of gathering data for a large number of households, income and health based welfare measures are typically only available at the national level or for broad regions. In the absence of readily available sub-nationally representative data on welfare outcomes, some researchers have turned to Population and Housing Census from which to construct sub-national indicators of wellbeing (such as asset indicators or well being indices).
