HUMAN DIMENSIONS OF GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

Welcome to CIESIN's Thematic Guides on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change. Thematic Guides offer overviews of some of the key topics and issues that pertain to human interactions in the environment and global change. The Living in areas prone to floodingprimary objective of the Thematic Guides is to provide a tool that allows researchers, policy makers, educators, and the public to quickly access background materials on key global change issues, and to locate key data sets and information resources. The guides are also designed to complement data-access tools like the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) Catalog Search Tool by providing context and background information.

Newer guides (released after 2001) provide extensive bibliographies of references and related resources, including online articles, reports, research project summaries and data sets, as well as many print publications. The bibliographies are dynamically linked to sections within the guides and are fully searchable (visit the search page). We provide here as well a collection of archived guides, which provide in-text hyperlinks to hundreds of journal articles, book chapters, government reports, maps and images, and other relevant materials.

The CIESIN Staff designed and built the thematic guides with advice from experts in the scientific community. All archived guides were reviewed by an editorial board. For the recently released guides, CIESIN sought external reviews of the material contained in selected sections. Read the title page of each guide for acknowledgements.

CIESIN reproduced the materials in the guides with the permission of the copyright holders for use by CIESIN in Thematic Guides. All uses of these materials must be in accordance with applicable copyright laws.

Some documents reproduced in the archived Thematic Guides were scanned and converted to electronic format using commercial optical character recognition (OCR) software. We have made efforts to correct errors that resulted from the scanning and electronic conversion process. Errors may still be found, however, particularly in equations, notes, references, and any text that includes unusual characters. Before basing further research on documents presented in the Thematic Guides, we recommend you check the accuracy of the electronic reproduction. Neither CIESIN nor NASA verifies or guarantees the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of the information provided. If you find or suspect an error in the text of a document, please send an email to CIESIN User Services providing the full URL and a message indicating the suspected error. Thank you for your understanding and assistance.

The preparation of the archived Thematic Guides was supported by CIESIN through a US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) grant NAGW-2901. The preparation of the recently released Thematic Guides was supported by NASA, Goddard Space Flight Center under contract NAS5-98162 The opinions, conclusions, and recommendations contained in the editorial essays and referenced documents are those of the respective authors and editors and do not necessarily represent the views of CIESIN or NASA.

The acknowledgements section on the title pages of each new thematic guide identify the funding agency responsible for that guide. Work for most of these guides was supported by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Goddard Space Flight Center under contract NAS5-98162 (for the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center). Again, the views expressed in the guides are not necessarily those of CIESIN, SEDAC, Columbia University, or NASA.

We wish to acknowledge the many publishers and other copyright holders who granted permission for reproduction of their materials in Thematic Guides. Without their generosity and cooperation, producing the Thematic Guides would not have been possible.
