Conservation Thematic Portal: Related Resources

Web Resources

GeoNetwork opensource: Jointly developed by FAO, WFP, and UNEP to share their spatial databases including digital maps, satellite images, and related statistics. GeoNetwork opensource provides users the capacity to access a wide selection of maps and other spatial information stored in different databases around the world through a single entry point. It allows easy sharing of geographically referenced thematic information between different FAO Units, other UN Agencies, NGOs, and other institutions.

Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Biodiversity Data Portal: An international non-profit organization providing free and universal access to data regarding the world’s biodiversity. A wide range of countries and organizations participate in GBIF and have made their data available here. These bodies maintain ownership for all of the data they share. Any feedback provided through this Web site will be passed back to the data provider. A new version of the portal is available here.

Global Land Cover Facility(GLCF): A center for land cover science with a focus on research using remotely-sensed satellite data and products to assess land cover change for local to global systems. The Web site provides access to a large number of global land cover data sets, many of them derived from MODIS and AVHRR.

International Species Information System (ISIS): Maintains computer-based information systems used by the worldwide zoological community. The ISIS central database contains information on two million animals—almost 15,000 taxa/10,000 species—held in zoological institutions, and some animals in the wild.

Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC): Part of NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) Data and Information System (EOSDIS) initiative to process, archive, and distribute land-related data collected by EOS sensors, thereby promoting the interdisciplinary study and understanding of the integrated Earth system. The role of the LP DAAC includes the higher-level processing and distribution of ASTER data, and the distribution of MODIS land products derived from data acquired by the Terra and Aqua satellites.

Portal of Carnivore Ecology and Conservation: The personal Web page of Guillaume Chapron, with a searchable database of scientific literature containing abstracts on carnivore ecology and conservation. In addition, the Web page has links to books, journals, and coming events related to carnivore ecology and conservation.

UNEP.Net: A global portal for a collection of regional and thematic portals of data sets used by UNEP and its partners in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report and other integrated environment assessments. Thematic portals include data on climate change, freshwater, population, forests, emissions, climate, disasters, health, and GDP. Regional portals include Arctic, Europe, and Latin America. The data sets can be displayed as maps, charts, and tables or downloaded in different formats.

UNEP-WCMC Conservation Databases: A collection of databases and information on threatened and endangered species, habitats, and ecosystems. The site has an Interactive Map Service (IMapS) that allows users to create customized maps online to meet their individual information requirements.

World Wildlife Fund-U.S. Conservation Science Program: A collection of important data sets on species and ecosystems available for valid scientific, conservation, and educational uses.
