Center for Hazards and Risk Research (CHRR): A new research program in disasters and risk management within the Earth Institute at Columbia University, motivated by a clear and compelling need to reduce the catastrophic impacts on society from natural and human-induced hazards. While advancing the predictive capability for hazard and risk research, the program promotes translating the key scientific concepts into language and rules useful to decision makers.
Emergency Disasters Data Base (EM-DAT): Maintained by the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED), EM-DAT is an international database supporting humanitarian action at national and international levels. The EM-DAT database records disasters and related human and economic impact by country and disaster type.
European Space Agency (ESA): The Ionia Web site provides access to a number of products developed by ESA. Browse collections by project name, thematic domain, or geographic scale. Examples of global data sets include the ATSR World Fire Atlas, ATSR Global Burned Forest Mapping, and Global Land Cover Service, among others.
International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR): A division of the United Nations aiming to build disaster-resilient communities by promoting increased awareness of the importance of disaster reduction as an integral component of sustainable development, with the goal of reducing human, social, economic, and environmental losses due to natural hazards and related technological and environmental disasters.
National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC): NGDC, part of the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS) hosted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), provides data sets of and points of access for many natural hazards. The hazards collection includes tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes, wildfires, and others. Photographs of specific disaster events are also available for browsing. Interactive Web mapping services are also provided.
ProVention Consortium: Seeking to advance disaster risk management in developing countries through a multi-faceted approach, the ProVention Consortium is a global coalition of international organizations, governments, the private sector, civic organizations, and academic institutions.
United Nations Environment Programme (UNDP): Part of the United Nation's development network, UNDP is an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build a better life.
UNEP/DEWA/GRID - Europe: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) Global Resource Information Databae (GRID) maintains a collection of value-added, environmental data global and regional in scale that is utilized in the environmental assessment and early warning activities of UNEP and its partners.
World Bank Hazard Risk Management Team: As the mission of the World Bank is to fight poverty, the aim of the Hazard Risk Management Team is to reduce human suffering and economic losses caused by natural and technological disasters. This is accomplished by helping the World Bank provide a more strategic and rapid response to disasters, and promoting the integration of disaster prevention and mitigation efforts into the range of development activities.
