Data sources

Official province level figures for 1991-1998 from:

Statistics South Africa, Statistical release P0302, Mid-year Population estimates http://www.statssa.gov.za/releases/demograp/98/0302.htm

Note that totals are quite a bit higher than the UN estimates.

Population by magisterial districts for 1993 (based on 1991 census data) was available from the Human Sciences Research Council, South Africa, in a data set used for the following study (also the source of the boundaries):

Whiteford, A., D. Posel, and T. Kelatwang (1995), A profile of poverty, inequality and human development, Human Sciences Research Council, Pretoria.

P90E and P95E estimates based on these data and average annual growth rates by province available from the national statistical office yielded totals that were considerably higher than the recent province estimates published by the NSO (see reference above). The district estimates were therefore adjusted uniformly to match the official province level estimates which are based on the 1996 census.
