Report of the Third Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers

ETHIOPIA

Ethiopia ratified the Vienna Convention and the Montreal protocol and became party to it in October 1994. In September, 1995, National Meteorological Services Agency (NMSA) organized a workshop to establish a National Ozone Committee. The Committee was formed from 11 governmental and non-governmental organizations as a permanent member and another group of about ten organization as associate members. A small subcommittee, Executive Committee, composed of five organization to run the overall ozone activities was also formed. The day-to-day activities pursuant to the implementation of the Protocol is being handled by the secretariat established within the NMSA under the Research and Training Department, Climate Change and Air Pollution Team. Since the formation of the national committee, some activities has been done towards the implimentation of the protocol. No monitoring and research activity has been attempted so far regarding ozone as there are no laboratories, Ozone observatory stations as well as trained man power in this area.

Most activities that are going on in Ethiopia are towards the implementation of the Protocol. Data survey on the Ozone depleting substances (ODSs) has been carried out. The national plan to phase out ODSs will be done soon.

We need technical as well as financial assisstance to effect Ozone monitoring and research activities.
