Gridded Population of the World, data are based on administrative unit and census data. The data are collected are based on where people reside, and therefore will underestimate day time populations in business and industrial areas. The data are referenced at a resolution of 2.5 arc-minutes in GPWv3, or 30 arc-seconds in GPWv4 and are only suitable for use with larger polygons that are greater than both the native raster resolution and the input administrative unit size. As the input administrative resolution varies widely over the globe, the output table includes a quality warning field that is flagged with a value of 1 where the land area in the input polygon is less than the average size of the administrative units that intersect the polygon. CIESIN follows procedures designed to ensure that data disseminated by CIESIN are of reasonable quality.
