8. Citation Information

Citation Information is the recommended reference to be used for the dataset. (Note: this section provides a means of stating the citation of a dataset, and is used by other sections of the metadata standard. This section is never used alone.)

8.11 Larger Work Citation  (Mandatory if Applicable)

NOTE: This guide only provides information concerning optionality at the section level and top level elements within each section. Keep in mind that the optionality of a section or compound element always takes precedence over the elements that it contains, and if deemed applicable, then the optionality of its subordinate elements is to be interpreted. Refer to either the FGDC Metadata Workbook, Version 2.0 or Section 8 of the USGS's "Image Map of the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata", a graphical representation of the Standard for rules concerning optionality.


8.1 Originator

Definition: The name of an organization or individual that developed the dataset. If the name of editors or compilers are provided, the name must be followed by "(ed.)" or "(comp.)" respectively.

Format: Free text.

8.2 Publication Date

Definition: The date when the dataset is published or otherwise made available for release.

8.3 Publication Time

8.4 Title

Definition: Name by which the dataset is known.

Format: Free text.

8.5 Edition

Definition: The version of the title.

Format: Free text.

8.6 Geospatial Data Presentation Form

Definition: The mode in which the geospatial data are represented.

Format: Free text (The listed domain is partially from pp. 88-91 in Anglo-American Committee on Cataloguing of Cartographic Materials, 1982, Cartographic materials: A manual of interpretation for AACR2: Chicago, American Library Association).

Definition: The identification of the series publication of which the dataset is a part. This metadata element contains the following sub-elements:

8.7.2 Issue Identification

Definition: Information identifying the issue of the series publication of which the dataset is a part.

8.8 Publication Information

Definition: Publication details for published datasets. This metadata element contains the following sub-elements:

8.8.1 Publication Place

Definition: The name of the city (and state or province, and country, if needed to identify the city) where the dataset was published or released.

8.8.2 Publisher

Definition: The name of the individual or organization that published the dataset.

Format: Free text.

8.9 Other Citation Details

Definition: Other information required to complete the citation.

8.10 Online Linkage

Definition: The name of an online computer resource that contains the dataset. Entries should follow the URL convention of the Internet.

8.11 Larger Work Citation

Definition: The information identifying a larger work in which the dataset is included.
