7. Metadata Reference Information

Metadata Reference Information provides information on the currentness of the metadata information, and the responsible party.

NOTE: This guide only provides information concerning optionality at the section level and top level elements within each section. Keep in mind that the optionality of a section or compound element always takes precedence over the elements that it contains, and if deemed applicable, then the optionality of its subordinate elements is to be interpreted. Refer to either the FGDC Metadata Workbook, Version 2.0 or Section 7 of the USGS's "Image Map of the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata", a graphical representation of the Standard for rules concerning optionality.

7.1 Metadata Date

Definition: The date that the metadata were created or last updated.

Format: Free date.

Example:

7.2 Metadata Review Date

Definition: The date of the latest review of the metadata entry.

Format: Free date.

Example:

7.3 Metadata Future Review Date

Definition: The date by which the metadata entry should be reviewed.

Format: Free date.

Example:

: January 1, 2003


7.4 Metadata Contact

Definition: The party responsible for the metadata information.

Guidelines and examples for applying the metadata sub-elements for Metadata Contact are contained in Section 10 (Contact Information).


7.5 Metadata Standard Name

Definition: The name of the metadata standard used to document the dataset.

Format: Free text.

Example:
Metadata Standard Name
: FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata


7.6 Metadata Standard Version

Definition: Identification of the version of the metadata standard used to document the dataset.

Format: Free text.

Example:
Metadata Standard Version
: FGDC-STD-001-1998


7.7 Metadata Time Convention

Definition: Form used to convey time of day information in the metadata entry; used if time of day information is included in the metadata for a dataset.

Format: Text; Select from list.

Example:
Metadata Time Convention
: local time
Metadata Time Convention
: local time with time differential factor
Metadata Time Convention
: universal time


7.8 Metadata Access Constraints

Definition: Restrictions and legal prerequisites for accessing the metadata. These include any access constraints applied to assure the protection of privacy or intellectual property, and any special restrictions or limitations on obtaining the metadata.

Format: Free text.

Example:

7.9 Metadata Use Constraints

Definition: Restrictions and legal prerequisites for using the metadata after access is granted. These include any metadata use constraints applied to assure the protection of privacy or intellectual property, and any special restrictions or limitations on using the metadata.

7.10 Metadata Security Information

Definition: Handling restrictions imposed on the metadata because of national security, privacy, or other concerns. This metadata element contains the following sub-elements:

7.10.1 Metadata Security Classification System

Definition: Name of the classification system for the metadata.

Format: Free text.

7.10.2 Metadata Security Classification

Definition: Name of the handling restrictions on the metadata.

Format: Free text.

Example:

7.10.3 Metadata Security Handling Description

Definition: Additional information about the restrictions on handling the metadata.

Format: Free text.

7.11 Metadata Extensions

Definition: A reference to extended elements to the standard which may be defined by a metadata producer or a user community. Extended elements are elements outside the Standard, but needed by the metadata producer. If extended elements are created, they must follow the Guidelines for Creating Extended Elements to the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata. This metadata element contains the following sub-elements:

7.11.1 Online Linkage

Definition: The name of an online computer resource that contains the metadata extension information for the dataset. Entries should follow the URL convention of the Internet.

Format: Free text; URL.

7.11.2 Profile Name

Definition: The name given to a document that describes the application of the Standard to a specific user community.

Format: Free text.
