The China Administrative Regions GIS Data: 1:1M, County Level, 1 July 1990 is composed of boundary files covering the administrative regions of China. The data are at a scale of one to one million (1:1M) for national, provincial, regional, and county levels. The temporal coverage represents the status of China administrative regions as of 1 July 1990.

In addition to the administrative regions data set that were developed for 30 December 1990, the SEDAC China project developed the China administrative regions GIS data that are valid for 1 July 1990. This data set was developed to correspond with the region names and associated codes that are used in the 1990 China census. The differences in the two data sets consist of the conversion of County and District regions to Cities:

  • Counties --> Cities (13 total)
  • Districts (Qu) --> Cities (4 total)

Dates of these changes and the associated code changes for these 17 cities are also provided in the links above. This dataset consists of the administrative regions boundary files and associated county, district, and city names. Note that spatial administrative region boundaries themselves did not change during this period. Information on the administrative region boundaries are provided at the China Administrative Regions GIS Data: 1:1M, County Level, 1990 data set page.

The China Administrative Regions GIS Data: 1:1M, County Level, 1 July 1990 was developed by a team from CIESIN, CASM (Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping) and CITAS - University of Washington under the NASA grant NASG-2901 and the Ford Foundation grant No.995-0669.

The data are available for download in ArcInfo Interchange (.e00) format here.
