The fundamental GIS: Digital Chart of China, 1:1M, Version 1 was provided by Dr. Qin Tang (CITAS Database Manager at University of Washington), Prof. William Lavely (Director of CITAS - China in Time and Space - Project and Associate Professor at University of Washington, Seattle, USA.) and Dr. Liu Chuang (Information Scientist at CIESIN).
The data were converted from the Digital Chart of the World (Vector Product Format version by the Defense Mapping Agency) and edited into the ArcInfo format. The DCW VPF version is in the public domain. For information on the Digital Chart of the World and Vector Product Format, please refer to the following documents:

Contributors
The Fundamental GIS, Digital Chart of China: 1:1M, Version 1 was compiled by Dr. Qin Tang (CITAS Database Manager at University of Washington) with the guidance of a team let by Prof. William Lavely (Director of CITAS - China in Time and Space - Project and Associate Professor at University of Washington, Seattle, USA.) and the assistance of Dr. Liu Chuang (Information Scientist at CIESIN) from February 1994 - October 1996.
Prof. William Lavely, Mr. Richard Cicone (Director of Department of Information Resource and Technology at CIESIN), Prof. G. William Skinner (Professor at University of California - Davis), Prof. Robert Dernberger ( Director of Center of China Study at University of Michigan), Prof. Robert Hartwell (Professor at University of Pennsylvania) and Prof. Lawrence W. Crissman (Professor at Griffith University, Australia) devised the project to develop the Digital Chart of China datasets in 1994. Dr. Qin Tang completed the data format conversion from Digital Chart of World (DCW) VPF (Vector Product Format) to ArcInfo export format in September 1994. Dr. Liu Chuang completed the data editing and validation from September 1994 - January 1995, and re-editing in October 1996.
The SEDAC (Socioeconomic Data and Application Center) China task group coordinated data management at CIESIN. Contributors included: Mr. Richard Cicone for coordinating project support; Dr. Liu Chuang (China Task Leader) for coordinating between CIESIN and CITAS, and within the China task group; Dr. Karen C. Sullivan (Information Specialist) for the metadata records; Ms. Mahasin Z. Muhammad (Data Systems Specialist) and Mr. Luming Chen (Data Technician) for archiving the data; Mrs. Clara J del Valle (Data Specialist) for permission of the data dissemination; Dr. Liu Chuang and Dr. Darryl Charache (Information Scientist) for the World Wide Web (WWW) site; Mr. Richard L. Robinson (User Services Manager) and Mr. Jack M. Evans (Data Specialist) for user support; Dr. Robert Chen (Director of Data Center Services and SEDAC Project Manager) provided overall project guidance.
